Nightly Glass Of Wine May Protect Boomer Women’s Bones

It’s well-known that exercise is good for our bones, even as we age, but how about that nightly glass of wine?

A new study of women in their 50′s and 60′s,  finds that moderate alcohol consumption may help prevent bone loss. The women in the study consumed about 1 1/2 drinks per day.

The findings fit with previous studies, including the Framingham Heart Study, which documented that moderate drinkers — people who consume one to two drinks per day — have higher bone mineral density compared with heavy drinkers and people who don’t consume alcohol at all.

But sorry guys, this one’s just for the ladies.

The latest study, published in the journal Menopause, finds evidence that moderate alcohol consumption influences bone turnover. It’s a small study, just 40 women, but it helps explain why this may be the case.

Every one of the centers that are called chakras, correspond to an area of the body, and are associated with certain behavioral characteristics and a stage of spiritual growth. Chakras represent specific psycho-physical energies that are activated one by one through the breath, along with the flow of the elements throughout daily life. The word Chakra in Sanscrit translates to wheel or disc.

Chakras are considered centers of activity that receive, assimilate, and express life force energy, and are said to be responsible for a person’s physical, mental, and spiritual functions. Each of the seven chakras represent a definite set of desires that correspond to a particular element. While desires should not be cultivated, they should be fulfilled, if they are really present. Otherwise one will be inevitably drawn back to them. This understanding of the seven chakras offers a way to balance ones desires and lead a more happy and spiritual life along personal impulses, or dare we say, destiny.

Male pill: gene discovery may lead to contraceptive

It may be possible to develop a new male contraceptive pill after researchers in Edinburgh identified a gene critical for the production of healthy sperm.

Experiments in mice found that the gene, Katnal1, was vital for the final stages of making sperm.

The authors of a study in PLos Genetics said a drug which interrupts Katnal1 could be a reversible contraceptive.

A fertility expert said there was “certainly a need” for such a drug.  Contraception in men is largely down to condoms or a vasectomy.

Infertility search

Researchers at the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh were investigating the causes of male infertility.

They randomly altered the genetic code of mice to see which became infertile. They then traced the mutations which led to infertility, which led them to Katnal1.

It contains the blueprints for a protein which is important in cells which support the development of sperm. Without the protein, sperm do not fully form and the body disposes of them.

Scientists hope they will be able to perform a similar trick in humans to stop sperm developing, without causing lasting damage.

One of the researchers Dr Lee Smith said: “If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive.

“The important thing is that the effects of such a drug would be reversible because Katnal1 only affects sperm cells in the later stages of development, so it would not hinder the early stages of sperm production and the overall ability to produce sperm.

He said it would be “relatively difficult” to do as the protein lives inside cells, however, he said there was “potential” to find something else that protein worked with, which might be an easier target.
