In the U.S., Massage Therapists are being recognized as health care professionals and receiving pay from insurance companies for their services. In today’s world of stress and conflict, more and more people are seeking out massage as an integral part of their health care regime. In 2005, 27% of the US population reported that they had received at least one massage throughout their life. This is an increase from 19% in 1995.

Career Opportunities…

According to the AMTA, in 2004, 23% of massage therapists worked in healthcare. Over 50% of practitioners work as independent therapists. The remainder work for spas, chiropractic offices, cruise ships, sports teams, rehabilitation and pain management centers, hospitals and other health care facilities. In 2002, alternative health care generated 36 Billion dollars.

Each state handles licensure differently. As of 2009, 42 states either required the NCTMB or the MBLX as the entrance exam. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the median yearly income of a massage therapist, is approximately $35,000 based on a 25 hour work week. On average nationally, in 2005, massage therapists earned $23.82/hr.

In 2006, ISPA noted that the spa industry reported 9.6 billion dollars in revenue. Since 2004, the total number of spa employees nearly doubled to 300,000. In the U.S., the number of spas has grown at an annual rate of 20% for the past 8 years.
