According to the AMTA, in 2004, 23% of massage therapists worked in healthcare. Over 50% of practitioners work as independent therapists. The remainder work for spas & resorts, chiropractic offices, cruise ships, sports teams, rehabilitation and pain management centers, hospices, hospitals and other health care facilities. In 2002, alternative health care generated 36 Billion dollars.
